The Hospice was founded in 1050 by Bernard de Montjoux, Archdeacon of Aosta, to welcome and protect the many travellers passing through this Alpine route.
A few fellow members of the clergy from the Aosta Valley helped Bernard build this house. Thus were born a community and a Hospice whose mission of hospitality has continued uninterrupted to this day.
The Congregation of the Canons of the Great St Bernard is also present at the Simplon Hospice and in several parishes in the region.
